Fiji is so well known for its beaches, resorts and tropical island activities that their food is often overlooked. While there isn’t a huge array of indigenous foods, what they do have is enticingly prepared in a creative Fijian style, especially when it comes to sea food, coconut and fruit.

Fijian food is largely influenced by Indian culture and many dishes will include curry or other spices. The basis for most Fijian dishes is sweet potato, rice, coconut, fish and taro. Traditional ways of preparation are also a unique cultural difference and every visitor to Fiji should take in a lovo feast.  Lovo consists of wrapped food which cooks under native leaves buried in the ground.

For an authentic Fiji food experience, try these native dishes:
Kokodo – fish stewed in fresh citrus juice of lemon and lime, topped with coconut cream and a mixture of onions, chillies and grated carrots and served chilled.
Palusami – This delicious mix of beef or fish with onion, tomato and garlic is wrapped in taro leaves and served hot or cold.
